Aloft

2021

; an urban retreat designed for the Tawny Frogmouth. Nestled beneath the flora of the surrounding parklands, ‘Aloft’ provides a safe and private space for the birds’ yearly breeding season within a busy metropolitan context and addresses the species’ direct threat to survival as a result of an ever-changing environment. Not only addressing the immediate ecological needs of the Tawny Frogmouth, the project also aims to raise public awareness of the delicate balance between urban development and wildlife conservation.

The design prioritises ecological sensitivity, blending in materially and structurally with the natural environment while providing a safe haven for the Tawny Frogmouth. Its permanent structure provides mates with a consistent and realiable nesting location and allows for safe human viewing from a distance, ensuring both the birds and the public can coexist in harmony. Its elevated position allows the birds to nest away from predators and disturbances, ensuring a secure and uninterrupted breeding season.
